2009 Tryout information

Blackfish will be holding this year’s men’s ultimate tryouts starting the week of April 28.  If you’re interested in playing competitive men’s ultimate this year, then we invite you to attend our tryouts on the following dates:

Tryout dates:
Tues, Apr 28 – OPEN tryout
Thurs, Apr 30 – OPEN tryout
Tues, May 5 – Closed tryout
Thurs, May 7 – Closed tryout
* All tryouts at 6pm and at a location TBD.  Please check back here for location details at a later date.

Team goals:
To qualify for and compete strongly at the World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC) in Prague in July, 2010.  We have spent a lot of time thinking about this goal and have put together a plan here.  All players who make the team should plan on attending this tournament.

Flatline Ultimate – our “B” squad:
Flatline will be starting their second season this year and will mostly be made of guys who attend tryouts but don’t make Blackfish.  Last year, Blackfish took several players from Flatline in the second part of the season.  Flatline is a great opportunity for competitive men to take their game to the next level.  If you’re thinking about playing with Flatline this year, please attend our tryouts.

Schedule:
Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 – 9 from tryouts until the end of September.  There will be a few weeks off during this time.  We will be attending the following tournaments/training camps:

May ??/?? – Weekend camp 1
June 6/7 – Flowerbowl (Vancouver)
June 20/21 – Solstice (Eugene, Oregon)
July ??/?? – BC Provincials
Aug 1/2 – Colorado Cup (Boulder, Colorado)
Aug 13-16 – Canadian Nationals (Winnipeg)
Sep ??/?? – UPA sectionals and UPA regionals (Pacific Northwest)

Pre-tryout training:
Thurs Apr 16, Tues Apr 21, Thurs Apr 23 – 6pm @ location TBD – Flatline/Blackfish open scrimmages and drills
Sunday nights – 6 – 8pm @ Point Grey High – 5 on 5 men’s pickup
*We encourage potential players to also attend the Furious George tryouts this weekend at UBC.

RSVP:
Anyone interested in attending tryouts who hasn’t attended before should send an email to mensultyvancouver@gmail.com with your name, contact information, and answers to the following questions:

  1. What is the highest level you have played at in the past?
  2. What would you bring to the team?
  3. What role do you want to play? (initiating cutter, d-line handler, etc)
  4. What training have you been doing in the off-season?
  5. Do you have any conflicts with the tournament or practice dates listed above?

Looking forward to seeing everyone out!

Roadmap to WUCC Prague 2010

Intro:

After the positive feedback we’ve received from the team regarding Blackfish’s participation at the World Ultimate Club Championships of 2010 in Prague, the Captains have put together a roadmap to help the team focus on milestones we need to meet on our way to Prague.  In between these milestones, we have a lot of work that we all need to commit to in order to succeed in Prague.

Notes:

  • It is Blackfish’s plan to have an open try-out in April-May 2009 to select the team that will compete to qualify and play in Prague.
  • There will be no open try-out in 2010 before the tournament. Blackfish may hold a closed try-out for individuals the team has identified.
  • Specific dates for tournaments and such will be written in as they become available.
  • Other tournaments may be added at a later time.
  • Tournaments leading up to specific milestones (Nationals, World Clubs) will have specific objectives, training and improvement goals.
